South East Devon

In 1841, lace makers from the Honiton area were commissioned to supply lace for Queen Victoria's wedding dress. The Queen was so impressed by the quality of the work, so she commissioned a second piece as a christening robe of her eldest son, later to be King Edward VII. This delicately woven lace gown is still in use today.

In more recent years, the town has also become the main centre in the West Country for antiques and antiquarian books. Honiton is a magnet for antique dealers and bargain hunters from all over the world, who come to browse in the 30 or so establishments, or to visit one of the regular auctions.

Strategically situated in South-East Devon, Honiton is one of the traditional gateways into the county of Devonshire, making it an excellent base for people wishing to visit or to tour East Devon.

During the 18th century, fires destroyed many of Honiton's older buildings. The re-building program created much of what we see today - a unique town, which is still largely 18th century in character. Honiton is both an attractive and prosperous town with an excellent shopping centre, holding twice-weekly street markets. It is twinned with Gronau-Leine in Germany and Mezidon-Canon in France, with regular exchange visits taking place between local schools and organisations.

Where to go?

A lifetime of things to see and do...

Nestling amongst the dramatic, steep wooded Blackdown Hills in the quiet depths of East Devon, Blossom Hill enjoys an enviable position on the edge of the pretty village of Dunkeswell which has a convenience store, social club, tennis club and a typical Devonshire thatched pub.

Blossom Hill is just six miles from the historic lace making town of Honiton, now widely celebrated as the antiques and curios capital of the South West- the delightful streets are made for browsing! Honiton offers all the amenities one could wish for, without venturing to the larger towns.

In nearby Simouth you'll find beautiful gardens and leisurely walks, regency history and fine hotels, clean beaches and friendly shops .....its' all here in this lovely seaside town that nestles beneath majestic red cliffs and the green hills of the glorious Sid valley.

Where the river Exe meets the sea, you'll find the seaside resort of Exmouth - a paradise for children and adults alike. Exmouth is well celebrated for it's long two-miles of golden sands, which is rare for this coast. The river Exe is internationally known for it's wildlife.

Less than 30 minutes drive away is Exeter, the capital city of Devon. A diverse city full of history and character, and following a 4 year redvelopment of the city centre - fantastic for shopping! The Quayside houses the visitor centre illustrating the history of Exeter from Roman times to the present day. There's lots to enjoy on the quay - walking, cycling, boating, or just relax and enjoy a leisurely lunch or afternoon tea by the water's edge. If it's shopping you enjoy, you'll drive many miles to equal the variety of shops in the city centre. From top brands to great local independant retailers, there's so much choice!
