Areas of Beauty

A stay at The Sanctuary provides the perfect opportunity to explore the exquisite charms of two magnificent Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs – both overflowing with attractions and activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Discover one of England’s most unique landscapes when you holiday in the North Wessex Downs. From sweeping chalk downs to river valleys, the peaceful ancient woodlands of Savernake Forest to the pretty meadows of the Vale of Pewsey, breathtaking panoramas are to be found in every direction. The North Wessex Downs is right on The Sanctuary’s doorstep, and exploring this area will be difficult to resist. Bring the bikes, bring the kids, bring the dogs, and whatever you do, be sure to bring the camera. Popular highlights here include the iconic White Horse Hill, the mysterious Avebury Circle and the stunning Kennet and Avon Canal. If you’re a fan of the TV series ‘Downton Abbey’ you won’t want to miss a visit to Highclere Castle where the show is filmed, and families will love the wealth of easygoing walks, fascinating museums and fun outdoor activities that make the North Wessex Downs such a fun holiday destination throughout the year. Just a short distance from London, but seemingly a world away, the Chilterns offers a wonderfully diverse range of landscapes and activities that mean whether you’re visiting as a couple, a family or a group, you’ll find no shortage of things to see and do. Bring your bikes along for your stay at The Sanctuary, and you can ride some or all of the famous Chilterns Cycleway that takes you through much of the area’s most attractive scenery. If you prefer to walk, you can enjoy views of the Thames, red kites circling in the sky, or gentle forest strolls. Sample typical Chilterns produce in local breweries, vineyards and farmers’ markets, enjoy a memorable picnic atop a grassy hill, or wander through pretty bluebell woods. There is such an array of inexpensive outdoor attractions to discover here, as well as historic architecture and pleasant little villages that you’re sure to be planning your next visit before you even return home.
