With large tracts of Essex made up of rural scenery, it’s no surprise that the county is home to a vast collection of fishing lakes. Carp fishing is particularly common in its specimen waters, but whatever your preference, angling enthusiasts of every standard will find something to keep them happy.
Ardleigh Reservoir is set within a picturesque valley just north of Colchester. The reservoir opened in 1971 and covers 120 acres supporting two major sports – fishing and sailing. It holds Carp, Pike and a large shoal of Bream. Permits can be bought from the on-site fishing lodge which enables you to fish from dawn to dusk. (Distance from park: 12.2 miles)

Chigboro Fisheries is situated on the outskirts of Maldon on the River Blackwater Estuary and provides 53 acres of complex lakes containing both Trout, Coarse and Carp, as well as offering pontoon fishing. One of the best spots for fishing in the area, Cuton Lakes has been developed over the past few years into an increasingly popular fishery for both pleasure anglers and those after the big Carp, Tench and Bream which it now holds. (Distance from park: 36.4 miles)
