Essex is an important and historical golfing county. In 1896, five-time Open Champion James Braid joined Romford Golf Club and went on to play a fundamental role in popularising the sport, as well as designing some of Essex’s finest courses. Meanwhile, with its abundance of picturesque countryside, the views from its courses offer an added attraction for golfing lovers.
Just shy of 600 yards, the 70 par Colchester Golf course providing a challenge for golfers of all levels. The Colne River runs through the course, adding to the picturesque views. There is also a golf shop available on site if you fancy browsing for new equipment. (Distance from park: 15.3 miles)
Located along the seaside in the suburbs of Frinton-on-Sea, the tidal ditches and sea breeze at Frinton Golf Club make for testing golfing conditions. It is a very peaceful course to play and often you can hear the wind blowing through the rushes. Situated within 55 acres of farmland, this 9-hole golf course and extensive practice range opened in 1992 and is extremely family friendly. The course is pay and play, and there’s an upstairs bar at the club which provide incredible panoramic views of the course and local scenery. (Distance from park: 6.9 miles)
Opened in 1992, Benton Hall Golf & Country Club offers a fabulous combination of challenging golf amid a stunning countryside setting. A superb variety of holes on a championship length course makes this a pleasurable golfing experience all round. Located within the mature grounds of the Braxted Park Estate in the Essex town of Witham, this scenic 9-hole course is deceptively challenging. Well-guarded greens and subtle breaks mean that scoring isn't always easy, despite the short length of the course. (Distance from park: 28.3 miles)
